Alternatives for filling up

High gas prices across the country have many people looking for alternatives to the gas-station fill ups. On its own water does not work as a fuel source; however, if you separate the hydrogen from the oxygen, the hydrogen gas can be burned with gasoline. Vaughn McMillan uses an HHO Conversion Kit to separate the particles, increase mileage and save money. "I was getting at least 3 miles to the gallon better," he says, "and that was without re-calibrating the oxygen sensor."
Another Calgary man makes use of propane in his vehicle. At 50 cents a litre, Wade Duffield says he is able to save a lot of money. "I calculated that at 60 cents a litre for propane, and a buck a litre for gas, if I was to put 400,000 clicks, I'd get $42,000 back with this truck alone," he says. Duffield sells conversion kits and has noticed an increase in business since gas prices have risen. When Wesley Flemming doesn't ride his bike to work, he uses a vehicle that has been converted to run on vegetable oil. He gets the oil free from local restaurants that would otherwise have to pay to recycle it. The vehicle has to be started using diesel fuel but then can be switched to vegetable oil. Fleming says he has travelled just over 5,000 kilometres on the free oil, and only used half a tank of diesel fuel.
